The School of Marxism at Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) has a legacy of over 70 years. In 1950, HIT offered ideological and political theory courses such as A History of Social Development, History of the Chinese Revolution, and Political Economy. In 1952, HIT took the lead among science and engineering universities in China by establishing a Political Theory Teaching and Research Section. On May 25, 2011, the School of Marxism was officially founded. In March 2014, the university further designated it as an independent secondary school directly under the leadership of the university administration. On December 19, 2016, it was recognized as one of the first Key University Schools of Marxism in Heilongjiang Province by the Publicity Department of the Heilongjiang Provincial Committee of the CPC, the University Work Committee of the Heilongjiang Provincial Committee of the CPC, and the Department of Education of Heilongjiang Province.

The School has established an integrated talent cultivation system covering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs. It currently offers two undergraduate programs in Ideological and Political Education and Marxist Theory, one master's degree program in the first-level discipline of Marxist Theory, and one doctoral program. Focusing on national development, the revitalization of Northeast China, and the university's educational tradition of being aerospace-oriented and serving national defense, the School has developed four distinctive research directions: Basic Principles of Marxism and Chinese-style Modernization; Socialist Theory with Chinese Characteristics and Regional Development in Northeast China; Construction of the Grand Ideological and Political Course and Online Ideological Security; and Modern Chinese Social Development and National Defense Modernization.

The School aligns with the university’s goal of cultivating outstanding talents as “academic masters, industry leaders, and pillars of national governance,” and implements the educational philosophy of “pursuing excellence and honing students’ skills to perfection through strict standards.” It has formulated and implemented over 20 talent training systems to ensure the quality of talent cultivation. Graduates are primarily employed in party and government organs, military units, universities and research institutes, enterprises and public institutions, where they engage in administrative management, theoretical propaganda, teaching and research, and ideological and political work, making positive contributions to the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era.
